Where Does Kooha Save Recordings and Settings?
Where Kooha keeps its recording settings via dconf and where its videos land by default on Linux.
Last updated
Kooha splits its files two ways: settings in the dconf database under its GNOME schema, recordings in ~/Videos (or the Preferences folder). There is no config file to copy.
That split means backups and resets work differently. Recordings back up like any video files, while settings migrate through dconf dumps. When Kooha misbehaves after an update, resetting the dconf branch restores defaults faster than reinstalling. Some versions use a Screencasts subfolder. Portal grants expire per run.
Where Kooha stores this, by platform
~/Videos (recordings; settings in dconf)
Settings live in dconf, not flat files; recordings default to ~/Videos. Use dconf dump to back up preferences. Portal permissions for screen capture sit outside both, in the Flatpak or system settings.
Frequently asked questions
where does kooha save recordings
In ~/Videos by default (Screencasts subfolder in some versions), or the folder picked in Preferences. The choice persists in dconf under the Kooha schema. Recordings never hide in the config tree, so check Preferences first when a file goes missing.
where are kooha settings stored
Through dconf at the Kooha schema path (org.gnome.Kooha or similar). The dconf Editor GUI or gsettings CLI reads them. Flatpak builds keep the same keys in the user dconf database, so the location does not change across installs.
how do i reset kooha settings
Reset the Kooha dconf branch with dconf reset -f. That restores defaults without touching recordings. If the record button stays grey, the issue is PipeWire permissions or portal access, not settings.
