Where Is the LeftWM Config File?

Where LeftWM looks for config.toml on Linux, and how themes layer on top of it.

Last updated

LeftWM configuration is a TOML file at ~/.config/leftwm/config.toml, with themes as subfolders beside it. The file defines keys, layouts, workspaces, and the active theme name.

Copy defaults rather than writing from zero. Upstream ships a commented config plus a themes gallery; starting from those keeps key names valid. Version changes occasionally rename keys, so check the release notes on upgrade.

Where LeftWM stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/leftwm/config.toml

Main TOML config plus themes/ subfolder beside it. Copy defaults from /usr/share/leftwm or upstream repo. Exact keys may vary by LeftWM version.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up LeftWM config?

Create ~/.config/leftwm/ and copy the default config.toml plus theme files from /usr/share/leftwm or the repo themes dir. Edit config.toml for keys and layouts; themes override looks. Reload with Mod+Shift+r per your bindings.

Where are themes versus config?

Themes live in ~/.config/leftwm/themes/<name>/ with their own up/down scripts and wallpaper. The main config.toml points at the active theme. Back up both trees; a config without its theme folder looks broken.
