Where Do LÖVE Games Store Save Files?

LÖVE games save under an identity folder in the per-OS app data location: %APPDATA%\LOVE on Windows, ~/.local/share/love elsewhere.

Last updated

LÖVE gives every game a sandboxed save folder named by its identity string, and the engine picks the root per OS. Unfused games running under love.exe use the project folder name; fused releases use the executable name. Either way the pattern is the same: app data root, then LOVE or love, then identity.

That indirection confuses first-time modders hunting saves. Read the identity from the game's main.lua (love.setIdentity) rather than guessing from the window title. Everything the game persists with love.filesystem lands in that one folder.

Where LÖVE stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\LOVE\[identity]

One subfolder per game identity. Fused games use the exe name, unfused ones the folder name. Copy the identity folder to migrate saves across machines.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/LOVE/[identity]

Same identity-subfolder pattern on macOS. The capitalized LOVE folder name is engine convention, not a typo worth correcting.

Linux
~/.local/share/love/[identity]

Same layout under XDG data home, lowercase love folder. Respects XDG_DATA_HOME when set; the identity tail stays identical across platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Which folder belongs to my game?

Check the game's source for love.setIdentity. Unfused games default to the folder name, while fused releases use the executable name. The save folder matches that identity string exactly.

How do I move a LÖVE save to another machine?

Copy the identity folder with the game closed. Saves are plain files inside, so they transfer across Windows, Mac, and Linux without conversion.
