Where Does LunarVim Store Config and Plugins?

LunarVim keeps user config in ~/.config/lvim/config.lua with plugins, linters, and data under ~/.local/share/lunarvim across Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Last updated

LunarVim layers an IDE setup over Neovim with one user file at its center. The config.lua under ~/.config/lvim declares plugins, options, keymaps, and language servers. Everything else derives from it on launch.

Runtime data accumulates separately in the lunarvim share folder: plugin checkouts, Mason binaries, and caches. That split keeps backups obvious and reinstalls reproducible. New machines need only the config file plus a bootstrap run.

Where LunarVim stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/lvim/config.lua

Single user config declaring plugins, LSP, and keymaps. Companion share folder holds checkouts and Mason. Bootstrap replays from config.

macOS
~/.config/lvim/config.lua

Same layout as Linux for Mac installs. Config plus share folder migrate together. Homebrew Neovim works underneath.

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\lvim\config.lua

Windows builds mirror the config and share layout. Use the same config.lua across platforms with path guards where needed.

Frequently asked questions

Where do LunarVim settings go?

Edit ~/.config/lvim/config.lua and restart or run LvimCacheReset then reload. Plugin tables, keymaps, and LSP settings all live in that one file. Check :checkhealth after big changes.

How do I migrate LunarVim to a new machine?

Back up ~/.config/lvim plus ~/.local/share/lunarvim which holds plugins and Mason packages. Reinstalls replay from the config file automatically. Version pinning avoids surprise breakages on update.
