Where Does LXQt Store Settings?

LXQt stores INI configs per component under ~/.config/lxqt. Panel, session, keys, and power each own a file.

Last updated

LXQt keeps one INI file per component under ~/.config/lxqt: lxqt.conf, session.conf, panel.conf, globalkeyshortcuts.conf, plus per-tool files for appearance, monitor, locale, power, and notifications. System defaults layer from /etc/xdg with the same names. Direct editing mid-session loses to the running session; stop it first.

Custom themes, palettes, and translations live under ~/.local/share/lxqt, while pcmanfm-qt keeps its own tree at ~/.config/pcmanfm-qt. That split decides backup scope: the lxqt dir for the desktop, the file-manager dir alongside it. Session autostart and module selection persist in session.conf, so a copied dir restores the exact login behavior.

Where LXQt stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/lxqt (component INIs)

One INI per component (panel, session, runner, keys, power, appearance). System defaults in /etc/xdg. Stop the session before hand edits. Themes in ~/.local/share/lxqt; pcmanfm-qt config travels beside it.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up my lxqt setup

Copy ~/.config/lxqt with the session stopped, plus ~/.config/pcmanfm-qt for the file manager. Each component (panel, session, runner, keys) owns one INI file; the whole dir is the backup. Avoid editing mid-session; the session overwrites.

how do i change the lxqt window manager

Run lxqt-config-session and pick the compositor plus screen locker. Wayland needs lxqt-wayland-session installed for those options to appear. Window manager choice under X11 lives in the same tool.
