Where Does Macchina Store Its Config?

Macchina reads macchina.toml from the XDG config dir with themes in a themes/ subfolder. Override per run with --config.

Last updated

Macchina centers on macchina.toml in the platform config dir (~/.config/macchina on Linux/BSD/macOS, %AppData%\macchina on Windows): theme selection, data toggles, and display options. Themes are TOML files in a themes/ subfolder beside it, referenced by basename without extension. The --config flag points at an alternate file per run.

First runs generate from the repo template (macchina --export-config prints it). That template is the documented starting point; diff your file against it after upgrades since new keys arrive regularly. Doctor mode (-d) diagnoses fetch failures without touching config, which separates display bugs from setup bugs fast.

Where Macchina stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/macchina/macchina.toml

Theme selection, toggles, display options. Export a starter with --export-config. Themes in themes/ subfolder, case-sensitive names. Override per run with --config.

Windows
%APPDATA%\macchina\macchina.toml

Same TOML layout under Roaming app data. Themes beside it in themes/. Portable use passes --config with an explicit path instead of relying on the default.

Frequently asked questions

how do i migrate macchina to a new machine

Copy macchina.toml plus the themes/ folder to the same XDG path on the new machine. Flags and presets travel in the file; the binary needs no other state. Validate theme names with --list-themes after moving.

how do i install a macchina theme

Drop the TOML file into the themes dir and set theme = "Name" (case-sensitive, no extension) in macchina.toml. Verify with --list-themes; a missing list entry means a wrong directory, not a bad theme.
