Where Is the Downloads Folder on Mac?
macOS drops browser and app downloads into the Downloads folder in your home directory, with a shortcut waiting in the Dock.
Last updated
Every mainstream Mac browser files downloads into ~/Downloads unless you told it otherwise. The folder appears in the Finder sidebar and as a stack on the right end of the Dock, so most people never need the full path.
The usual surprise is Safari tidying up behind you. Its settings can remove downloaded items after a day, which looks exactly like a failed download a week later. Installer DMGs piling up here are also the classic reason a Mac mysteriously runs out of room.
Where macOS stores this, by platform
~/Downloads
Reach it in Finder with Option+Command+L or through Go > Downloads. Each browser keeps its own download location setting that overrides this default.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change where Safari saves downloads?
Open Safari Settings > General and pick a new File download location. Chrome and Firefox keep an equivalent switch in their own settings pages.
Can I stop Safari deleting old downloads?
Yes. In the same General pane, set Remove history items and Remove download list items to Manually. The files then wait until you delete them yourself.
