Where Is the macOS Keychain Stored?

macOS login.keychain-db path, where System and iCloud keychains differ, and how to back up passwords safely with Keychain Access.

Last updated

macOS keeps passwords, certificates and Wi Fi keys in keychain files under ~/Library/Keychains. The login.keychain-db file unlocks at sign in and holds most personal secrets. System items live apart in /Library/Keychains for all users.

Use Keychain Access rather than copying files by hand. Copying a locked database to another Mac rarely unlocks cleanly. Export specific items or enable iCloud Keychain for moves, and keep one encrypted backup of the whole Keychains folder before major repairs. First Aid in Keychain Access fixes most verification failures.

Where macOS stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain-db

System keychain is at /Library/Keychains/System.keychain. iCloud items sync separately and never appear as local files. Use Keychain Access to inspect.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up my Mac passwords?

Open Keychain Access, select the login keychain, and export items, or turn on iCloud Keychain sync. Copying the raw .keychain-db file works only with the same user password on restore.

Why does macOS keep asking for keychain passwords?

The login keychain password drifted from your account password after a reset. Open Keychain Access > Settings and choose Reset to relink them, then re-enter saved Wi Fi keys once.
