Where Are macOS Tahoe Wallpapers Stored?
macOS Tahoe default wallpapers location, system and user library paths plus Photos saves.
Last updated
Tahoe ships new default desktop pictures while keeping classic macOS paths. System images sit read only under /System/Library/Desktop Pictures. User additions and Photos saves land in the user Library.
Browse from System Settings rather than Finder for daily changes. Direct folder copies work, but SIP blocks writes to system paths. Keep originals outside the library before importing.
Where macOS stores this, by platform
/System/Library/Desktop Pictures
Read only defaults. Copy out, never write in. Tahoe adds new names here while older releases keep theirs. Use System Settings Wallpaper to apply.
~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.wallpaper/Images
User imports and Photos saves land here. Add through Settings to register correctly. Back up this folder to carry customs across Macs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a custom wallpaper on Tahoe?
Open System Settings, Wallpaper, then Add Photo or Add Folder. Dropping files into system folders fights SIP and updates. The Photos route survives upgrades.
Did Tahoe move wallpaper folders?
No. Tahoe keeps the same split: system defaults in /System/Library plus user additions in ~/Library. Names change per release, paths do not.
