Where Does Manjaro Store Package Cache and Build Files?

Manjaro caches pacman packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg, keeps Pamac build files under /var/tmp, and stores Timeshift snapshots where Timeshift was configured.

Last updated

Manjaro adds two caches on top of the Arch base. The pacman cache at /var/cache/pacman/pkg works as usual. Pamac, the graphical installer, also keeps AUR build files under /var/tmp in folders named after your user. That second folder is the one Manjaro newcomers never find.

Snapshots come from Timeshift, which Manjaro ships but asks you to configure. There is no single fixed snapshot path because it follows your Timeshift settings. Open the app and read the location field rather than hunting the filesystem.

Where Manjaro stores this, by platform

Linux
/var/cache/pacman/pkg

Standard pacman download cache. Use paccache -rk2 to keep two versions or sudo pacman -Sc to drop uninstalled ones. Same layout as Arch and EndeavourOS.

Linux
/var/tmp

Pamac build directories like pamac-build-yourname. Safe to delete after installs finish. Check here when /var fills up despite a small pacman cache.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean package caches on Manjaro?

Run sudo pacman -Sc for the pacman cache and clear old build folders under /var/tmp that start with pamac-build. Pamac keeps cloned AUR sources there after building, and they pile up on systems with many AUR packages.

Where are Timeshift snapshots on Manjaro?

Open Timeshift and read the location field since it depends on your setup choice. RSYNC mode typically uses a /timeshift folder on the selected partition. The Manjaro wiki recommends keeping snapshots on a separate partition from root when possible.
