Where Does Mousepad Store Settings?

Mousepad keeps preferences in GSettings under org.xfce.mousepad. Print settings and keybindings live as files in home config.

Last updated

Mousepad splits settings in two. Everyday preferences (wrapping, indent, plugins) live in GSettings under the org.xfce.mousepad schema, editable from the preferences dialog or the command line. There is no INI file holding them.

Two files do exist on disk. Print dialog values go to mousepadrc under the Mousepad config folder, and custom keybindings go to accels.scm in the same folder. Both appear after first use, so launch the app once before looking. The preferences dialog remains the friendliest editor.

Where Mousepad stores this, by platform

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/Mousepad/mousepadrc

Print dialog settings. Complete a print run once (even to file) and Mousepad fills this in. Keep PageSetupSaved true.

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/Mousepad/accels.scm

Custom keybindings. Edit with another editor while Mousepad is closed, since it overwrites the file each session.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tweak Mousepad from the terminal?

Run gsettings list-recursively org.xfce.mousepad to see everything. Set values with gsettings set. The preferences dialog edits the same store.

How do I change a Mousepad keyboard shortcut?

Quit Mousepad first, since it rewrites the file on exit. Then uncomment the line for the shortcut and change the keys at the end.
