Where Does Nautilus Store Bookmarks and Scripts?

Nautilus bookmarks live in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks. Scripts go in ~/.local/share/nautilus/scripts, the rest in dconf.

Last updated

Nautilus splits its state across three places, which is why no single folder looks complete. Bookmarks are a plain text file shared with every GTK app. Scripts are files in a folder. Everything else moved into dconf years ago.

The bookmarks path still says gtk-3.0 even on GNOME 40+ systems. That name is legacy and the file is still the live one. Nemo and other GTK file managers read the same bookmarks file, so edits carry across them.

Where Nautilus stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks

One file:// URI per line with optional label. Shared with GTK file choosers, so it affects more than Nautilus.

Linux
~/.local/share/nautilus/scripts

Context menu scripts. Files here must be executable. Subfolders become submenus.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up Nautilus bookmarks?

Edit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks. Each line is a file:// URI plus an optional label. Changes apply instantly, and the same file feeds GTK open dialogs in other apps.

Where do Nautilus right-click scripts go?

Put executable scripts in ~/.local/share/nautilus/scripts. They appear under the Scripts submenu on right click. Make them executable or Nautilus ignores them silently.

Where are Nautilus preferences now?

Preferences moved to dconf under /org/gnome/nautilus/preferences/. View with dconf dump, reset with dconf reset -f on that path.
