Where Does Neorg Store Notes and Config?
Neorg keeps its setup in your Neovim config and notes in .norg workspaces (~/neorg by default). Back up both halves.
Last updated
Neorg splits into code and content. The plugin setup lives in your Neovim config (typically ~/.config/nvim/lua/plugins/neorg.lua), declaring workspaces, modules, and keybinds. Notes themselves are .norg plaintext files inside workspace directories, defaulting to ~/neorg unless you point elsewhere.
That plaintext is the good news: notes stay readable without Neovim, parsable by any tooling, and trivially synced. The setup half matters because workspaces, GTD states, and concealer behavior come from config, not files. Pin the plugin version before upgrading; Neorg warns itself that breaking workflow changes still happen.
Where Neorg stores this, by platform
~/neorg (default workspace)
Default .norg workspace: notes, journal, tasks as plaintext. Overridable per workspace in setup. Sync with any file sync; the format needs no database. Concealer toggles raw markup view.
Frequently asked questions
how do i back up my neorg setup
Copy your nvim config (the neorg.lua plugin file) plus every workspace directory. Setup without notes is an empty organizer; notes without setup lose journal, GTD, and export behavior. Version both in git.
where does neorg store notes by default
The workspace root setting in your neorg setup. Default is ~/neorg, overridable per workspace. Concealer hides markup by default; toggle it to see raw .norg when paths or links misbehave.
