Where Does the Nextcloud Client Store Its Config?
Nextcloud Desktop config file on every OS, and how to find which folders it actually syncs.
Last updated
The Nextcloud Desktop client records accounts and synced folders in nextcloud.cfg: %APPDATA%\Nextcloud on Windows, ~/.config/Nextcloud on Linux, and a sandboxed Containers path on current macOS (older builds used ~/Library/Preferences/Nextcloud).
The synced folders themselves are your choice from the first run wizard, so there is no fixed data path to print. Find them in the tray client under Account settings, or read the folder entries straight out of nextcloud.cfg. Citrix users get one caveat: the Roaming profile must persist or the account setup repeats every session.
Where Nextcloud stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Nextcloud\nextcloud.cfg
INI config with accounts, sync folder list, proxy and updater options. Find chosen sync folders in the tray client Account settings or in the folder entries of this file.
~/Library/Containers/com.nextcloud.desktopclient/Data/Library/Preferences/Nextcloud/nextcloud.cfg
Sandboxed container path for current releases (v33+). Older builds used ~/Library/Preferences/Nextcloud/nextcloud.cfg; check there if the container path is absent.
~/.config/Nextcloud/nextcloud.cfg
Same INI role as other OSes: accounts plus folder sync entries. Multiple sync folders allowed; all are listed here.
Frequently asked questions
Which folders is my Nextcloud client actually syncing?
Open the tray client and check Account settings, or read the folder entries in nextcloud.cfg. Folders are chosen per machine at setup, so two computers can sync completely different sets.
Why do I have to set up Nextcloud again every Citrix session?
Because the Roaming profile holding %APPDATA%\Nextcloud is not persisting. Persist it (or redirect that folder) and the account setup survives between sessions.
