Where Does Oh My Fish Store Config and Packages?

Oh My Fish keeps its framework in ~/.local/share/omf while your config stays in ~/.config/fish with conf.d.

Last updated

Oh My Fish splits itself from your settings. The framework, themes and packages live in its own data directory, while your prompt and abbreviations stay in the normal fish config home.

That split makes reinstalls painless. Delete the framework folder and your config survives untouched. Custom bits belong in conf.d and functions, which OMF never overwrites.

Where Oh My Fish stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.local/share/omf

Framework, themes and packages. Your config is separate at ~/.config/fish with conf.d snippets and functions. Reinstall OMF by removing this folder and rerunning the installer.

macOS
~/.local/share/omf

Same layout on Mac. Homebrew installs change nothing about the paths. Back up ~/.config/fish; the omf folder rebuilds from your package list.

Frequently asked questions

how do i completely remove oh my fish

Run omf destroy, then delete ~/.local/share/omf if remnants stay. Your ~/.config/fish files remain, so the shell still works afterward.

where do omf themes live

Inside the omf data folder under themes, plus custom themes in ~/.config/fish/conf.d or the themes directory. Set a theme with omf theme and it persists in your config.
