Where Is the OmniFocus Database Stored?

OmniFocus keeps its database as OmniFocus.ofocus inside a sandboxed container. Mac path with version differences plus iPhone location.

Last updated

The OmniFocus database is a package called OmniFocus.ofocus sitting inside the app's sandboxed container. The container name changes with the version and with where you bought the app, which is why old instructions miss.

Backups sit in a Backups folder next to the database. The supported way in is holding Option and choosing File then Show Backups, or File then Show OmniFocus.ofocus in Finder, rather than digging through Library by hand.

Where OmniFocus stores this, by platform

macOS
~/Library/Containers/com.omnigroup.OmniFocus4/Data/Library/Application Support/OmniFocus

OmniFocus.ofocus and the Backups folder live here for the current direct version. Version 3 uses OmniFocus3 in the name, and Mac App Store builds append .MacAppStore to the container.

iOS
Files app > On My iPhone/iPad > OmniFocus > OmniFocus.ofocus

Visible in the Files app under On My Device. Version 4 folders also carry an OmniFocus 4 Documents file to tell installs apart. Automatic backups on Mac changed location in version 4 to sit near Documents.

Frequently asked questions

why do OmniFocus container paths differ between guides?

The container embeds the major version and the store. Direct and Mac App Store builds of the same version use different containers, so a version 2 path will never match a version 4 install.

how do i open the OmniFocus backups folder?

Hold Option, open the File menu, and choose Show Backups. For a backup without launching, paste the container path above into Finder's Go to Folder dialog.
