Where Are OneShot Save Files Located?
OneShot splits saves between Roaming Oneshot with the true save.dat and Documents My Games with meta puzzle files. Both matter.
Last updated
OneShot stores its save in two places on purpose. The real progress sits in Roaming Oneshot as save.dat with a settings companion. A second folder under Documents My Games holds flags and puzzle artifacts the story manipulates.
That split is the whole design. Clues wander onto the desktop and into Documents as the meta narrative demands. Steam Cloud covers the account side, but a full backup means both folders, and a true restart means emptying both.
Where OneShot stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Oneshot
True save with save.dat plus p-settings.dat for the player name. Deleting save.dat restarts the run. Case spelling varies across guides with no on-disk difference.
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Oneshot
Meta puzzle side with the save_progress flag and clue files appearing through the story. Absent until late game, so do not panic at a fresh install. Back up alongside Roaming.
<SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/420530/pfx/
Steam Play prefix for App ID 420530. Both Windows save roots mirror inside the prefix drive. Meta puzzles behave identically under Proton.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up OneShot saves?
Copy %APPDATA%\Oneshot with save.dat and p-settings.dat plus %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Oneshot with its progress flag. The Documents folder appears only late in the story, so fresh runs back up the Roaming side alone.
How do I fully restart OneShot?
Delete save.dat in %APPDATA%\Oneshot and clear the Documents My Games counterpart. Removing only one side leaves the meta flags behind and the game remembers. The player-name reset lives in p-settings.dat beside the save.
Is the folder Oneshot or OneShot?
Ignore the difference. File Explorer treats Oneshot and OneShot identically, so guide spellings vary while the folder stays one. What matters is the two roots: Roaming for truth, Documents for the fiction the game plays with you.
