Where Does Opengist Store Data and Config?

Opengist keeps config.yml, the database, and git-backed snippets in one home dir. Docker mounts it at /opengist.

Last updated

Opengist centers on an opengist-home directory holding config.yml, opengist.db (SQLite default, Postgres/MySQL optional), the git repositories per snippet, the search index, and logs. Docker mounts a host folder at /opengist for all of it (older images used /root/.opengist, migrated long ago). Env vars prefixed OG_ override any YAML value.

Each snippet being a git repo changes backup math: the database plus the repos directory is the complete backup, and both must move together. Git push/pull works against snippets directly, which doubles as an offsite copy method for individual pastes. Chown the host dir to the container UID/GID or writes fail on first snippet.

Where Opengist stores this, by platform

Linux
/opengist (Docker volume)

config.yml plus opengist.db, git repos, index, logs. Mount persistently (older path /root/.opengist migrated to /opengist). OG_* env overrides file values. UID/GID must own the host dir.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up opengist

Copy the whole data dir (~/.opengist or the /opengist volume) with the app stopped, plus config.yml when customized. Database, git repos, and index travel together; partial copies orphan snippets from search or history.

can i configure opengist without a yaml file

Pass --config with the path, or set OG_* env vars which need no file at all. Docker mounts like /path/to/config.yml:/config.yml are standard. Unset values fall back to built-ins, so minimal files work.
