Where Does OpenMPT Save Songs and Settings?
OpenMPT saves tracks where you choose, with settings and autosaves under AppData for backup and recovery.
Last updated
OpenMPT works like a normal Windows app for saves. File Save puts .mptm, .it, .xm, .s3m, or .mod files in the folder you pick. Autosave copies and backup files go to a folder you set under Options, useful after a crash.
Settings live apart from songs in %AppData%/OpenMPT. That holds mptrack.ini, key bindings, plugin cache, and tunings. Copy that folder to migrate shortcuts. Songs only need their own files plus external samples.
Where OpenMPT stores this, by platform
%AppData%\OpenMPT
mptrack.ini, Keybindings.mkb, plugin.cache, SongSettings.ini, and tunings. Open it from Help, then Show Settings Folder. Copy this to keep shortcuts and paths.
Documents (user chosen songs)
Default suggestion for modules. Autosave folder is set in Options under Paths. Check there first after a crash before reopening the same file.
Frequently asked questions
Where are OpenMPT autosaves?
Open Options and look at the Paths and autosave page for the exact folder. OpenMPT can keep timed copies there. Copy any recovered file out before continuing so the next autosave does not overwrite it.
How do I make OpenMPT portable?
Copy the install folder to a drive and create an empty OpenMPT.portable file beside it, then copy settings from %AppData%\OpenMPT into that folder. Adjust sample and plugin paths after the move.
