Where Does Opera Store Your Profile?

Opera's profile folder per OS, cache split, sessions recovery, and the path shortcut.

Last updated

Opera follows Chromium conventions with Opera branding. The profile root holds Preferences, Bookmarks, extensions and a Sessions folder with timestamped tab sets, while cache sits in a separate Local tree.

Type opera://about to confirm the live path before touching anything. Copying profiles demands a fully closed browser, or extensions self heal by deleting the transplant on launch.

Where Opera stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Opera Software\Opera Stable

Profile root with Default inside. Cache separately at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Opera Software\Opera Stable. Sessions below it keep two closed sets plus three while running.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/com.operasoftware.Opera

Same layout. Close Opera fully, then copy the whole folder for migration. Reopen twice so extensions settle before judging success.

Linux
~/.config/opera

Same layout under XDG config home. opera://about prints the exact active path when installs or channels differ.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recover lost Opera tabs after a crash?

With Opera open, copy the Sessions folder aside, close it, clear Sessions, then restore the oldest Session and Tabs timestamp pair. Closed browsers delete the third set, so act before relaunching.

Why did my copied Opera extensions vanish?

Opera prunes extensions it did not install itself. Use the standalone install shuffle: transplant into a standalone profile/data, launch twice, then move that tree into the normal install.
