Where Are Order of the Sinking Star Save Files Located?

Thekla's puzzle game keeps saves, keymaps and menu state together in one Saved Games folder named after the game.

Last updated

Order of the Sinking Star uses the plainest convention Windows offers: a folder called Order of the Sinking Star inside Saved Games, at %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star. Progress, keymaps and the menu state file all sit together, so copying one folder backs up everything.

The save files are marked recursive, meaning nested subfolders count as part of the save. Copying only the loose files at the top level is not enough. Demo progress carries into the full game on Steam, and only on Steam; the PS5 and Switch 2 versions keep separate data with no equivalent user-visible folder.

Where Order of the Sinking Star stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star

Holds the save slots (*.history, *.sokoban_status), keymaps (*.keymap) and settings.menu_state. Copy the whole folder including subfolders, since the save files are recursive.

Linux
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/499170/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Order of the Sinking Star

The same tree inside the Proton prefix for app ID 499170 on Steam Deck. Steam Cloud sync data also appears under userdata/499170, but the prefix copy is the real one.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Order of the Sinking Star save file?

%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star. The default profile's progress is in default\Status.sokoban_status, with your keymap and history files in the same folder. No AppData digging required.

Does demo progress carry over to the full game?

Yes, on Steam. Thekla confirmed it before launch and the demo and full game share the same folder through Steam Cloud. Console demos and save files from other players will not transfer the same way.

How do I back up or restore a save?

Close the game, copy the entire Order of the Sinking Star folder somewhere else, and paste it back to restore. Turn Steam Cloud off for the game while swapping files, or the older cloud copy can overwrite what you just restored.
