Cloud saves complicate the picture the usual Klei way: Steam Cloud mirrors the folder, so a corrupt local colony can propagate before you notice. Keep dated manual copies outside Documents for any colony past cycle 500. Rebuilding one of those from memory is not a project anyone finishes.
