Where Are Permafrost Save Files Located?

Permafrost keeps its .pfs save files in a SaveGame folder inside the game's install directory, with autosaves beside manual saves.

Last updated

SpaceRocket Games launched this frozen-world survival game into Early Access in October 2026, with co-op for up to four players. Saves go somewhere that surprises people: the game's own install folder, in a SaveGame directory full of .pfs files.

You save from the Tab menu under the Game tab, and the game also autosaves, so a normal session leaves several files behind. Because everything sits inside steamapps\common\Permafrost, uninstalling or moving the library puts the saves at risk, and so does a rough patch. Copy the SaveGame folder before every major update.

.pfs files, manual and automatic together. The nested Permafrost folder is real; the game's cloud configuration points inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Permafrost save location?

Inside the install directory: steamapps\common\Permafrost\Permafrost\SaveGame. Right-click the game in Steam, choose Manage, then Browse local files to reach it.

How do I save in Permafrost?

Press Tab, open the Game tab, and choose Save Game. The game also autosaves at points, shown as a disk icon in the upper left, so sleeping in a bed is not required.

Will updates break my save?

Early Access games often change save structure between patches. Keep a copy of the SaveGame folder from before each big update so a broken save does not end the run.
