Where Is the phpMyAdmin Config File?
phpMyAdmin reads config.inc.php in its top level folder, or etc phpmyadmin on Debian and Ubuntu. Copy the sample to start.
Last updated
All phpMyAdmin settings live in one file, config.inc.php, placed in the top level directory next to index.php. It only needs the values you want to change. Defaults come from the libraries defaults file, which you should never edit.
Linux distro packages move the file. Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora keep it under etc instead of the web tree, sometimes with an extra user override file loaded last. Windows installs via bundles like XAMPP keep it inside the bundled phpMyAdmin folder. The setup wizard can generate the file for you.
Where phpMyAdmin stores this, by platform
/usr/share/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php
Upstream layout for manual installs. Create it from config.sample.inc.php if it does not exist yet.
/etc/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php
Debian and Ubuntu package layout. The apache.conf beside it wires phpMyAdmin into Apache. Server definitions go in this file.
C:\xampp\phpMyAdmin\config.inc.php
Bundled install on Windows via XAMPP. The file sits in the phpMyAdmin folder inside the XAMPP tree.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create config.inc.php?
Copy config.sample.inc.php to config.inc.php in the top level folder and edit that. The sample ships with every download and holds the minimal working setup.
Where do I add another MySQL server?
Edit config.inc.php on the server, or the user override file where your distro provides one. Never edit libraries config.default.php. Your changes there vanish on upgrade.
