Where Does Pianoteq Store Presets and Settings?
Pianoteq prefs, presets and custom folders on Windows, macOS and Linux, and which folders to copy when migrating.
Last updated
Pianoteq stores everything under a Modartt folder in the standard per OS app data root. Preferences, custom fxp presets and MIDI files sit together, which makes the whole thing trivially portable. The footprint stays small because the instruments are modelled, not sampled.
One setting overrides all of this. Pianoteq's Options dialog has a Folders tab that redirects the data directory anywhere, so check there first when the defaults look empty. Movers only need the one Modartt tree.
Where Pianoteq stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Modartt\Pianoteq
Paste %APPDATA%\Modartt into Explorer. Presets live in a Presets subfolder as fxp files, and recent MIDI captures sit at the top level. Copy the entire Modartt folder to migrate.
~/Library/Application Support/Modartt/Pianoteq
Use Go to Folder in Finder. Moving this tree between Macs is supported directly; everything (preferences, presets, mappings) comes along in the one folder.
~/.local/share/Modartt/Pianoteq
Custom presets confirmed at Presets/My Presets under this root. Pianoteq also runs on ARM boards like the Raspberry Pi with the same layout, and the --prefs flag can redirect preferences to any file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move Pianoteq to a new computer?
Copy the whole Modartt folder to the matching location on the new machine. Everything (preferences, fxp presets, MIDI mappings) travels together, which Modartt's own forum confirms as the supported move.
My Pianoteq files are not in these folders, why?
Open Options and look at the Folders tab. Pianoteq lets you redirect its data folder, so a custom path there overrides every default listed here.
How big is the Pianoteq data folder?
Around 50 MB for the core, since the pianos are physically modelled rather than sampled. Custom presets and MIDI captures add a little on top, but the folder stays tiny next to sampled pianos.
