Where Does Podman Store Machine VMs?

Podman Machine virtual machines live in a machine folder under your containers data directory. Images inside the VM stay separate.

Last updated

Podman runs containers natively on Linux but needs a virtual machine on Mac and Windows. Those VMs live in a machine folder under the user containers data directory, one subfolder per machine with its disk image and config. Container images and volumes live inside the VM, not beside it.

On Windows the machine itself runs through WSL under Podman Desktop management, so prefer the machine list commands over poking at disks directly. Disk growth surprises everyone once. A VM image holding old images and build cache can dwarf the config folder that points at it.

Where Podman stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\.local\share\containers\podman\machine

One subfolder per machine with disk and config. Manage through the machine list commands rather than deleting files by hand. Windows machines run inside WSL under Desktop management.

macOS
~/.local/share/containers/podman/machine

Same per machine layout. VMs here back all Podman Desktop workloads on the Mac, so this folder explains most Podman disk usage.

Linux
~/.local/share/containers/podman/machine

Machine VMs for non native architectures and test setups. Native Linux containers skip VMs entirely and store state in the containers storage tree instead.

Frequently asked questions

Podman Machine fails to start after an upgrade. What helps?

Remove the machine and recreate it. Stale VMs from older Podman releases cause the strangest startup errors. Export any data you care about first, since removal deletes the VM disk.

How do I find machines I forgot about?

List machines to see names and state, then stop the ones you do not use. Each running VM holds gigabytes of disk and RAM, and forgotten test machines add up fast.
