Where Does Quicken Classic Store Data Files?
Quicken Classic keeps the .QDF data file plus BACKUP and Attach folders in Documents Quicken on desktop. Use File Backup.
Last updated
Quicken Classic is file based, unlike its cloud siblings. One .QDF file holds every account, transaction, and investment. It lives in a Quicken folder inside Documents with BACKUP and Attach beside it. That folder is the whole archive.
Keep the live file on a local drive. Cloud synced folders corrupt .QDF files when sync grabs them mid-write, which Quicken warns about directly. Back up through File menus rather than raw copies, and restore through the same menu rather than double clicking backups.
Where Quicken Classic stores this, by platform
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Quicken
Main .QDF data file plus BACKUP and Attach beside it. Keep it on a local drive, never in OneDrive or Dropbox. Find it fast with File then Show this file on my computer.
~/Documents/Quicken
Same Documents relative home for the data file and backups. Convert rather than copy when moving between Windows and Mac builds. Use File menus for backup and restore on both.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up Quicken properly?
Use File then Copy or Backup File inside Quicken and save to an external drive. The wizard writes a dated .QDF-backup into Documents Quicken BACKUP by default. Never copy the live .QDF while Quicken runs; the file stays locked mid-write.
How do I restore a Quicken backup?
Use File then Restore from Backup File and pick the dated copy. Never open a BACKUP file directly, since it may lag the live data. Automatic copies land in the BACKUP folder every few runs for exactly this rescue.
