Where Does Rust (the Game) Store Config?

Where Rust the game keeps client.cfg, keys.cfg and custom configs inside its install folder.

Last updated

Rust keeps client config in a cfg folder inside its own install directory: client.cfg for settings, keys.cfg for binds, favorites.cfg for servers. It is the rare modern game that stores config with the program rather than in AppData.

That placement has one sharp edge: verifying integrity or reinstalling touches the same tree your custom files live in. Keep master copies of custom cfgs outside the Steam library, since Steam treats unknown extra files as expendable during repairs.

Where Rust stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rust\cfg

Reach it via Steam > Manage > Browse local files, then open cfg. Run writecfg in the F1 console after binding keys. Custom files execute with exec <name>.cfg.

Frequently asked questions

My Rust binds vanish on restart. How do I save them?

Open the console (F1), set your binds, then run writecfg. Console binds live in memory until that command flushes them to keys.cfg. Quitting without it discards the session work silently.

How do I use a custom config file in Rust?

Create a text file like fps.cfg in the cfg folder with one command per line, then run exec fps.cfg from the F1 console. Launch options work too but have a character limit, so files win for anything beyond a handful of tweaks.
