Where Is the Windows Search Index Stored?
Windows Search keeps its whole index in Windows.edb, a file that balloons until rebuilt.
Last updated
Windows Search does not scan your disk on every query. It maintains an index database called Windows.edb under ProgramData, and that single file can swell to tens of gigabytes on busy machines.
Size and corruption are the two classic symptoms. Excluding folders in Indexing Options shrinks future growth, and a full rebuild cures corruption at the cost of hours of reindexing. Never delete the file by hand with the service running; stop Windows Search first or it fights back.
Where Windows stores this, by platform
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb
The search index database. Stop the Windows Search service before touching it. Rebuild from Indexing Options when searches return stale or missing results.
Frequently asked questions
Search is slow and Windows.edb is huge. How do I fix it?
Open Indexing Options, then Advanced, then Rebuild. The service recreates Windows.edb from scratch over the next hours; searches stay slow until it finishes.
