Where Does Sioyek Store Config and Annotations?

Where Sioyek keeps prefs, keybindings, and the shared.db annotation database on each desktop OS.

Last updated

Sioyek splits config four ways: shipped defaults plus user overrides for both prefs and keys. User files live per OS under the paths below; defaults ship with the install. The annotation database (shared.db or test.db depending on version) sits in the data dir.

Edit only the _user files. Defaults get replaced on update. For syncing, the database path matters more than the configs: one shared.db in cloud storage follows you everywhere.

Where Sioyek stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\sioyek\prefs_user.config

User prefs override (prefs_user.config) plus keys_user.config beside it. Database shared.db nearby. Open via the prefs command inside Sioyek. Exact db name varies by version.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/sioyek/prefs_user.config

Same four-file layout (prefs, prefs_user, keys, keys_user) plus the database. Use Go to Folder in Finder since Library is hidden.

Linux
~/.config/sioyek/prefs_user.config

User overrides in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/sioyek with the database under ~/.local/share/sioyek/. Man page documents the split; distro packages may add /etc/sioyek defaults.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sync Sioyek annotations between computers?

Point shared_database_path in prefs_user.config at a synced file (e.g. inside Dropbox) on each machine. That single shared.db carries bookmarks, highlights, and reading state across installs. Keep app versions close to avoid schema drift.

Which files should I edit?

Edit prefs_user.config and keys_user.config, never the shipped prefs.config or keys.config. The _user files override defaults and survive updates. Open them fast with the prefs and keys_user commands in the Sioyek command bar.
