Where Are Linux New User Skeleton Files?

Linux seeds new home directories from /etc/skel, so files placed there appear for every future account.

Last updated

Every new Linux account starts as a copy of /etc/skel. Default bashrc, profile and any custom files you add there land in each fresh home directory automatically.

Existing users never see changes, since copying happens once at creation. Pair skeleton edits with adduser config so the right shell and groups accompany the files.

Where Linux stores this, by platform

Linux
/etc/skel

Template files copied by useradd into each new home. Add company bashrc snippets or default configs here. Changes affect future accounts only, never existing ones.

Frequently asked questions

how do i give every new user the same bashrc

Place it in /etc/skel as .bashrc. Every account created afterward inherits it. Existing users need the file copied into their homes manually.

why do new users miss files i added to skel

The tool used bypassed skel, or a custom SKEL path is configured. Check /etc/default/useradd and /etc/login.defs for the skeleton path in effect.
