Where Is the skhd Config File?

skhd reads hotkeys from a single .skhdrc file in your home directory on macOS.

Last updated

skhd keeps everything in one dotfile. Hotkey definitions, application rules, and mode declarations all live in ~/.skhdrc. There is no secondary database or cache to migrate.

That single file is the whole backup. Version it with dotfiles and every Mac behaves identically. Accessibility permission is the only machine-local step, granted once per install.

Where skhd stores this, by platform

macOS
~/.skhdrc

Single hotkey file in home. Reload the service after edits. Accessibility permission is per-machine and granted once outside the file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move skhd to a new Mac?

Copy .skhdrc to the new machine and restart the service. No installer state matters beyond the file. Grant accessibility permission when prompted on first run.

Do skhd edits apply immediately?

Reload the service after saving. Most setups pick up edits without logout. Check the service log when a binding silently fails, since syntax errors skip quietly.
