Where Does Snes9x Store Saves and Save States?

Snes9x splits battery saves and states by platform. The Windows Saves folder and the Linux .snes9x tree.

Last updated

Snes9x has two save kinds. Battery saves (.srm) mimic the cart and load in other emulators. Save states freeze the whole machine and only load back into Snes9x. Both default to the Saves folder next to the exe on Windows.

Linux builds use ~/.snes9x instead, with sram, savestate, screenshot, and cheat subfolders. Some GTK builds default to the ROM directory instead, so check the Options paths when files seem missing. Either way the setting behind it is in the preferences dialog.

Where Snes9x stores this, by platform

Windows
.\Saves

Subfolder of wherever you extracted Snes9x, holding .srm battery saves plus numbered state slots. Change it under Options, Settings. Copy this one folder to migrate everything.

Linux
~/.snes9x/sram

Battery saves here; states in ~/.snes9x/savestate. GTK packaged builds may use the ROM folder instead, so confirm in settings. .srm files transfer to other SNES emulators.

macOS
~/.snes9x/sram

Same Unix style tree as Linux. Save states break across major versions while .srm files survive, so keep real in game saves for anything you care about.

Frequently asked questions

snes9x srm vs save state, which do i keep

Keep the .srm. It mimics the cartridge battery and opens in other emulators and across Snes9x versions. States are convenient mid boss snapshots but are tied to the emulator build that made them.

where did my snes9x saves go on linux

Check ~/.snes9x/sram first, then the ROM folder. Repository GTK builds vary the default. Search the disk for *.srm to settle it; the newest file shows where the running build writes.
