Where Does Sourcetree Keep Bookmarks and Settings?

Where Sourcetree keeps bookmarks.xml, tabs and settings on Windows and macOS, and which files to back up.

Last updated

Sourcetree tracks your repositories in bookmarks.xml: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Atlassian\SourceTree on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/SourceTree on macOS. Tabs, hosted accounts and custom actions sit beside it as sibling XML files, with a versioned user.config holding the rest on Windows.

The repos themselves live wherever you cloned them; bookmarks are pointers, not containers. That split is why a new PC with repos at new paths shows a full list of dead entries. Fix the paths, not the app, when migrating.

Where Sourcetree stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Atlassian\SourceTree\bookmarks.xml

Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\Atlassian\SourceTree into Explorer. bookmarks.xml holds the repo list, opentabs.xml the open tabs. Per version settings hide in SourceTree.exe_Url_* subfolders as user.config.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/SourceTree

Clearing this folder is the official preference wipe. Reach it in Finder with Go > Go to Folder. Back up first: bookmarks and view state go with it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate my Sourcetree bookmarks to a new PC?

Copy bookmarks.xml (plus opentabs.xml and user.config on Windows) to the new machine before first launch, matching paths. Repos must sit at identical paths or every bookmark shows as missing. Re link stragglers through the bookmark manager afterwards.

Sourcetree broke after an update. How do I reset it?

Wipe the preferences: delete bookmarks.xml, opentabs.xml and userhosts on Windows (plus the versioned user.config), or clear ~/Library/Application Support/SourceTree on Mac. Back the files up first: the wipe costs your bookmark list and view settings.
