Where Does Spectacle Store Settings on Linux?

Spectacle keeps spectaclesettings in ~/.config, with screenshots in your chosen save folder.

Last updated

Spectacle stores capture defaults, save location, and annotation prefs in its config file under ~/.config. Screenshots go to the folder set in the app, defaulting under Pictures. Settings and images never mix.

Copy the config to migrate hotkeys and defaults. Image folders move like normal media. Wayland and X11 sessions share the same file, so desktop switches keep working.

Where Spectacle stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/spectaclerc

Main settings file. Copy with Spectacle closed. Screenshots live in the save folder from preferences, not here.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Spectacle screenshots saved?

In the save folder from Spectacle preferences. Change it per project to keep captures sorted. Config only remembers the path.

How do I back up Spectacle hotkeys?

Copy spectaclerc from the path above. Global shortcuts may also live in the desktop settings, so check both after migration.
