Where Is the spectrwm Config File?

spectrwm reads spectrwm.conf from the home folder. Bindings, bars, and quirks live in one plain text file.

Last updated

spectrwm keeps a single config file directly in the home folder, not under XDG config. Bindings, layouts, status bar commands, and window quirks all live there as plain assignments. An XDG path override exists for users who prefer it.

Restarting the window manager reloads the file, and the built in restart binding makes iteration fast. The man page stays the authority since option names shift between releases. Status bar scripts run on the same interval as window scans. Workspace programs spawn from the same file at login time.

Where spectrwm stores this, by platform

Linux
/home/<username>/.spectrwm.conf

Main config with bindings, bar, and quirks. Plain assignments, one per line. Reload with the restart binding.

Frequently asked questions

How do I configure spectrwm?

Create spectrwm.conf in home with bindings and bar settings. The man page documents every option with defaults.

How do I migrate spectrwm?

Copy spectrwm.conf to the new home folder. No other state exists, so one file moves the whole setup.
