Where Is the Stubby Config File?
Stubby DNS-over-TLS YAML config paths on Linux, macOS and Windows.
Last updated
Stubby reads one YAML file with strict privacy defaults. Source, distro and Homebrew installs each place it somewhere else. Windows keeps it beside the program folder.
A custom path flag accepts yml or yaml only. Legacy JSON configs load solely through that flag. Trust anchor and pid files branch off nearby per platform.
Where Stubby stores this, by platform
/etc/stubby/stubby.yml
Strict privacy YAML read at startup, restart needed after edits. Source versus distro paths differ. Custom path flag accepts yml or yaml. Trust anchor and pid files nearby.
/opt/homebrew/etc/stubby/stubby.yml
Same YAML under the Homebrew prefix with Intel and Silicon variants. Helper script and log branch off the prefix.
C:\Program Files\Stubby\stubby.yml
Same YAML beside the program folder with bitness variants. No service restart helper beyond the app itself.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up Stubby?
Copy stubby.yml with the service stopped. Restart after any edit since the daemon reads at startup only. Keep the custom path flag in mind on setups that override the default.
Why do guides disagree on the path?
Source builds use a local etc tree while distro packages use the system etc path. Homebrew splits Intel and Apple Silicon prefixes. Check the running install before scripting.
