Where Does Sylpheed Store Mail and Settings on Linux?

Sylpheed keeps mailboxes and settings in ~/.sylpheed-2.0 on Linux, in mbox compatible folders.

Last updated

Sylpheed stores each account mailbox as plain mbox files under ~/.sylpheed-2.0 (older builds used ~/.sylpheed). Settings, filters, and address book sit beside the mail in the same tree. That layout copies cleanly between machines.

Back up the whole folder with Sylpheed closed. Individual mbox files open in other clients too, which helps migration. Keep permissions tight since mail archives are sensitive by nature.

Linux
~/.sylpheed-2.0

Mailboxes in mbox format plus sylpheedrc settings and address book. Copy the tree with the app closed. Very old installs may still use ~/.sylpheed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Sylpheed to a new computer?

Install the same Sylpheed version, then copy ~/.sylpheed-2.0 over and fix ownership. Launch once and check every account folder before deleting the old copy.

Can other clients read Sylpheed mail?

Yes for mbox mailbox files. Point an importer at copies, never the live files. Settings and filters need manual recreation elsewhere.
