Where Does Self-Hosted Takahe Store Data?
Takahe env file, media, static and cache locations for self-hosted Linux installs.
Last updated
Takahe is a Django app, so config and content split cleanly. Secrets and the database DSN live in an env file in the install dir. Uploads and collected static branch off the same root.
Media only stays local with the local backend. Remote backends push uploads elsewhere and the media folder stays thin. Check TAKAHE_MEDIA_BACKEND before assuming disk usage means uploads.
Where Takahē stores this, by platform
[install-dir]/.env
Env file with secrets and PostgreSQL DSN, overridable via TAKAHE_ENV_FILE. Media defaults to install media dir, static to static-collected, cache mount separate. No SQLite file. Example media root /srv/takahe/media.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up Takahe?
Back up the env file, the media directory and the PostgreSQL database together. Static files can be rebuilt. Media without the database leaves files with no posts pointing at them.
Where is the Takahe database file?
PostgreSQL holds accounts and posts. The install never writes a SQLite file. Point the DSN vars at the database host and confirm connectivity before touching media paths.
