Where Does Talos Keep Its Config Files?

Talos clients read talosconfig from ~/.talos, with kube access fetched per cluster through talosctl.

Last updated

Talos splits client config in two. The talosconfig file in ~/.talos holds cluster endpoints and admin credentials for talosctl. Kubernetes access comes separately by fetching kubeconfig per cluster when needed.

Nodes themselves stay immutable with no shell to configure. Machine specs apply through the API and persist in etcd, not in files you edit. Back up talosconfig and the fetched kubeconfigs together for full access.

Where Talos stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.talos/config

talosctl contexts and credentials live here. Fetch kubeconfig per cluster with talosctl kubeconfig. Treat the file like a password.

macOS
~/.talos/config

Same client layout on Mac. The TALOSCONFIG variable can point elsewhere for multi user setups. Keep contexts named per cluster.

Windows
C:\Users\[username]\.talos\config

Same file under your profile. Line endings stay Unix style inside. Confirm the active context with talosctl config context.

Frequently asked questions

How do I switch Talos clusters?

Change talosctl context to the stored endpoint entry. Each context pairs an endpoint with its credentials. Fetch a fresh kubeconfig after switching for kubectl work.

Where is the Talos kubeconfig?

Nowhere by default. Run talosctl kubeconfig to download one into your kube directory. It expires with the cluster CA policy, so re fetch when access lapses.
