Where Does Task Scheduler Store Tasks?

Task Scheduler keeps task definitions as XML files in C:\Windows\System32\Tasks, mirrored in the registry and viewable in the MMC snap-in.

Last updated

Task Scheduler stores each task as an XML file in the system Tasks folder, organized in subfolders mirroring the console library. Credentials and security descriptors ride in the registry beside them, which is why file copies alone sometimes misbehave.

The MMC console remains the sane interface: it validates triggers, shows run history, and exports portable XML. Direct file edits work but bypass every check, so export through the console when a task needs to travel. Disabled tasks stay in place as files, which is why the folder can look busier than the active library.

Windows
C:\Windows\System32\Tasks

One XML file per task in subfolders matching the console library. Credentials live in the registry alongside, so console export/import migrates more faithfully than raw copies.

Frequently asked questions

A task exists but never runs. Where do I look?

Open Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc) and check the task library. The console reads the same store as the files, and its history tab shows last-run results that the XML alone cannot.

How do I move a task to another machine?

Export it from the console to an XML file first. Reimporting that file elsewhere preserves triggers, actions, and principals exactly. Copying raw files between machines works but skips validation.
