Where Does TextMate Store Bundles and Settings?

TextMate keeps bundles and globals in Application Support TextMate, with per-project .tm_properties files.

Last updated

TextMate centralizes in ~/Library/Application Support/TextMate. Bundles/ holds your own and third-party bundles, Pristine Copy/ holds untouched originals, Managed/ holds auto-installed ones, and Global.tmProperties carries global settings. Per-project settings live in .tm_properties files beside the code, closest file winning.

The Avian folder is archaeology. TextMate 2 alphas kept bundles under Application Support/Avian so version 1.x could coexist; later releases migrated everything to TextMate/ and dropped Avian reads. Guides referencing Avian predate the move.

Frequently asked questions

How do I migrate TextMate to a new Mac?

Copy ~/Library/Application Support/TextMate to the new machine. Store-bought and auto-installed bundles re-download, but hand-made bundles in Bundles/ and Global.tmProperties must travel manually.

Where do I put a downloaded .tmbundle?

Third-party bundles go in Application Support TextMate Bundles (double-click to install). Your own editable bundles belong there too; Pristine Copy holds untouched originals for diffing.
