Where Does the Texts App Store Local Data?
The Texts app caches chats, media, and plugin config in an Electron data folder per OS, while messages stay with each network.
Last updated
Texts runs every chat network inside one Electron shell, and the local folder reflects that. Chat cache, downloaded media, and session state sit in a per-OS data folder, with plugin paths recorded in a small JSON config in your home directory.
Actual message history belongs to the networks (iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, and the rest). The local folder speeds things up and holds drafts, but a fresh login pulls history back from each service. Media already downloaded stays in the cache until cleared.
Where Texts stores this, by platform
%APPDATA%\Texts
Chat cache, media, and session state. Plugin paths live in ~/.texts-conf.json (same file on all desktop OSes). If the folder name varies by release, search Roaming AppData for Texts.
~/Library/Application Support/Texts
Same layout as Windows plus the shared ~/.texts-conf.json for plugins. Automattic merged Texts and Beeper teams, so check Beeper before investing in custom plugins.
~/.config/Texts
Same interior folders. Texts supports Linux desktops unlike Beeper mobile-first builds, which is one reason to stay on Texts for now.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up the Texts app?
Quit Texts and copy the data folder for your OS to external storage. Expect to re-authenticate some accounts on restore; message history resyncs from each service.
Should I use Texts or the new Beeper app?
They are different apps from the merged team: Beeper is the actively developed successor with mobile apps, while original Texts stays desktop-only. Your subscription carries over to Beeper Plus.
