Where Are The Surge Save Files Located?

The Surge Steam saves hide in userdata\378540\remote, while Origin and Store copies use Documents\The Surge\save.

Last updated

The Surge on Steam ignores every conventional save folder and writes into Steam's userdata tree under its app ID, 378540. Inside the remote folder sit autosave files numbered by slot.

Copies bought elsewhere behave normally. Origin and Windows Store versions use a save folder inside Documents, and moving between editions means copying between these two layouts. The slot files only register in game if that slot already started a run.

Where The Surge stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<steamid>\378540\remote

Steam version. <steamid> is your account's numeric ID. Slot files are autosave0.sav upward. To copy a run into another slot, start a game in the target slot first, then overwrite its file.

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\The Surge\save

Origin and Windows Store versions. Plain files that copy between machines easily. Paste them into the Steam remote folder above when migrating editions, matching slot numbers.

Frequently asked questions

how do i back up the surge saves on steam

Copy the 378540\remote folder for your Steam user ID with the game closed. Each autosave file is one slot. Restoring is a straight paste back into the same folder.

why does my copied surge save not show up in game

The slot needs an existing run first. Start a new game in the destination slot, quit to menu, then overwrite its autosave file with your copy. Unstarted slots ignore dropped in files.

can i move a surge save from origin to steam

Yes. Create a run in the matching Steam slot, close the game, and copy the Origin save over the Steam slot file. Slot numbers must line up or the game will not list it.
