Where Are Thief The Dark Project Save Files Located?

Thief Gold keeps numbered saves in the install SAVES folder, with fan mission files kept fully separate.

Last updated

Thief: The Dark Project stores saves as game0000.sav upward in a SAVES folder inside the install directory, with bindings in cfg and ini files beside it. Fan mission saves live inside each mission's own folder instead. Steam Cloud and GOG Galaxy both sync the tree under app ID 211600.

Numbering starts at zero and the menu shows slots, so file order matters when restoring by hand. Linux runs through Proton with the mirrored layout. Copy the SAVES folder plus mission folders for a complete backup with the game closed.

Where Thief: The Dark Project stores this, by platform

Windows
<install>\Thief Gold\SAVES

Numbered game saves from 0000 in the install SAVES tree; fan missions keep their own folders. Config in cfg and ini beside them. Cloud syncs under app 211600.

Linux
~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Thief Gold/SAVES

Same install-relative SAVES inside the native library for app 211600. TFix and fan missions apply the same way through Proton.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install Thief Gold mods and keep saves?

Install TFix first, then drop the mod into the install folder per its readme. Fan mission saves live inside each mission folder, not the main SAVES tree, so back those up separately.

How do I manage lots of Thief saves?

Use DarkSaveManager for slot juggling. It renames and swaps game saves in and out of slots during play for TDP, Gold and Thief II alike. Manual renames work but the tool prevents numbering collisions.
