Where Is the Windows Thumbnail Cache?

Thumbnail thumbcache files in Explorer's folder plus safe rebuild and auto delete fix.

Last updated

Windows centralizes Explorer thumbnails in thumbcache files sized by resolution inside the Explorer AppData folder. Deleting them never touches your photos; Explorer simply re-renders previews on next visit.

Corrupt caches show blank or stale thumbnails. The fix is stopping Explorer, deleting the cache files, and restarting, or ticking Thumbnails in Disk Cleanup for the gentle version.

Where Windows stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db

Sized variants like 32, 96, 256 and 1024 plus an index. Rebuild via taskkill explorer, del the files, start explorer. Stop silent auto deletes via the Thumbnail Cache Autorun registry value and DiskCleanup task.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to delete thumbcache files?

Yes. They are regenerable previews only. Personal files stay untouched and thumbnails rebuild as folders reopen.

Why does the thumbnail cache keep disappearing?

Silent Disk Cleanup with Autorun enabled plus low disk space maintenance wipes it. Flip the Autorun value to 0 and disable the scheduled task to keep it.
