Where Does TiddlyWiki Store Your Wiki?

Single file TiddlyWikis live wherever you saved the HTML. Node.js wikis are folders with tiddlywiki.info and a tiddlers subfolder.

TiddlyWiki has two storage modes and they share nothing. The classic single file wiki is one HTML file wherever you put it, commonly in Documents or Downloads. Browser save extensions can only write into Downloads and below, so many people keep their wikis in a subfolder there.

The Node.js edition is a folder, not a file. The folder holds tiddlywiki.info with the wiki metadata and a tiddlers subfolder with one file per tiddler. Optional plugins, themes, and languages folders sit beside them. You choose the folder location when you init the wiki.

Where TiddlyWiki stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\MyWiki\notes.html

Single file wiki in the default spot. The name and folder are yours to choose. This file is the entire wiki.

macOS
/Users/<username>/Documents/MyWiki/notes.html

Same single file layout on Mac. Node.js users keep a wiki folder instead, with tiddlywiki.info and tiddlers inside.

Linux
/home/<username>/mywiki/tiddlywiki.info

Node.js wiki folder. Create it with the init server command, then start it with the listen command. Each tiddler is a file under tiddlers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up a single file TiddlyWiki?

Save the wiki file itself. Everything (content, config, themes) is inside that one HTML file, so one copy is a full backup. Keep older copies too, since a bad save overwrites the only copy.

How do I back up a Node.js TiddlyWiki?

Back up the whole folder. Each tiddler is a separate .tid file under tiddlers, plus tiddlywiki.info holding the wiki metadata. That layout also works well with git.
