Where Does ToolJet Store Config and Data?

ToolJet Docker deploy folder, env file and Postgres volume on Linux.

Last updated

Self hosted ToolJet is a compose stack: server, client, Postgres and Redis from one .env and one compose file in your deploy directory. Apps, data sources, credentials and user accounts live in Postgres. The files on disk only carry connection strings and secrets.

That makes the backup story short. Copy the deploy folder for configuration and dump Postgres for content. Environment names, encryption keys and SSO settings in .env must travel with the dump or restored apps cannot decrypt their data source credentials.

Where ToolJet stores this, by platform

Linux
.env and docker-compose.yml in your deploy folder

Holds ports, database URLs, encryption keys and SSO config. App data persists in the Postgres volume; list it with docker volume ls. Never commit .env; rotate keys after any leak.

Frequently asked questions

where are my ToolJet apps stored

In the Postgres database of the compose stack, not as files. Back up with pg_dump against the ToolJet database container. The deploy folder .env holds the key that decrypts stored data source passwords.

why do data sources fail after moving ToolJet

The encryption key in .env changed or was not copied, so stored credentials no longer decrypt. Restore the original .env alongside the database dump, then restart the stack in the same deploy directory.
