Where Are Townscaper Save Files Located?

Townscaper saves towns as .scape files in a Unity LocalLow folder on Windows. Paths for Windows, Mac and Linux plus Steam Cloud notes.

Last updated

Townscaper keeps every town as a single .scape file inside a Saves folder. The folder lives in the Unity LocalLow directory under the developer name Oskar Stalberg, which is the part people mistype. Note the spelling without the ring above the a.

Steam Cloud tracks these files, so normal play needs no manual work. Direct file access still matters when you want a backup, want to share a town, or need to rescue one after an update. The files are tiny, so zipping the whole Saves folder is the fastest way to share.

Where Townscaper stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Oskar Stalberg\Townscaper\Saves

SteamDB confirms this as the Cloud root, pattern *.scape. Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow into the Explorer bar since the folder is hidden. Copy .scape files with the game closed.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Oskar Stalberg/Townscaper/Saves

Unity convention on Mac. If the folder is absent, search ~/Library/Application Support for Townscaper, since store builds can differ in casing.

Linux
<SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/1291340/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/Oskar Stalberg/Townscaper/Saves

Windows layout mirrored inside the Proton prefix for app ID 1291340. Check ~/.steam/steam or your custom library path if the default is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Does Steam Cloud sync Townscaper saves?

Yes for the files Steam tracks. Keep a manual copy anyway, since a town is a single .scape file and overwriting it in game cannot be undone.

How do I back up a town?

Copy the .scape file out of Saves while the game is closed. Drop it back into the same folder to restore, then pick it from the in game town list.
