Where Does Tox Store Profiles and History?
Tox identity lives in a .tox profile file, with qTox keeping profiles, history, and nodes in a tox folder.
Last updated
Tox has no accounts and no servers holding your identity. Everything is a .tox profile file on your disk: keys, contacts, and history together. Lose the file and the identity is gone with no recovery line to call.
qTox shows the exact path under Profile settings and offers export for moving between clients. Chat history follows the profile when history saving is on, encrypted with it when you set a password. Back up the file, then back it up somewhere else too.
Where Tox stores this, by platform
~/.config/tox/
Profiles (*.tox), chat history, and bootstrapNodes.json live here. Export from Profile settings for client moves. Portable mode shifts everything to the working directory instead.
~/Library/Application Support/Tox
Same layout under Application Support per the qTox manual. The in-app Profile page shows the current file and location for confirmation.
qTox > Profile > Current profile location (in-app)
Profile path is shown in-app under Profile settings with export built in. Back up the .tox file; it cannot be reissued if lost.
Frequently asked questions
How do I move my Tox identity to a new computer?
Copy the .tox profile file to the same folder on the new machine. The file is the identity, so anyone holding it owns the account. Password-protect it inside qTox first.
